JOB TITLE: SENIOR INSTRUMENT ENGINEER

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Senior Instrument Engineer will provide instrumentation, control and electrical design and specifications for all capital projects at the Rensselaer facility.  He/She will also establish and maintain instrumentation, control and electrical standards for the site and maintain the installed base of control systems including validation documentation and programming.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

1.     Establish and maintain instrumentation, control and electrical standards at the Rensselaer facility.


2.     Experienced in developing and preparing:

2.1.  Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), assist Process/Mechanical Engineers

2.2.  Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), assist Process/Mechanical Engineers

2.3.  Field process evaluations

2.4.  Control Narratives

2.5.  Cause & Effect Charts

2.6.  Safety/Interlock Charts

2.7.  Instrumentation studies (i.e. Choice of level, flow and analytical elements/transmitters)

2.8.  Instrument Specifications and Data Sheets (Process sensors, transmitters, valves, actuators, positioners, discrete sensors, analytical instruments)

2.9.  Automation/Control System Architecture drawings


3.     Experience specifying Programmable Logic Controllers, PLC and/or Distributed Computer Control Systems


4.     Assist design personnel with: Instrument Location plans, PLC Panel layouts, I/O Wiring Diagrams


5.     Experience developing and/or updating Loop Diagrams


6.     Interface with electrical engineers to develop: One-line diagrams, Electrical area classification drawings, Instrumentation and controls conduit and cable schedules.


7.     Design and specify instrumentation, controls and electrical equipment and systems for all capital projects.

8.     Maintain existing control systems on site such as the Foxboro I/A distributed control system and Rockwell programmable logic controllers with hardware and programming upgrades as applicable.

9.     Maintain all required documentation such as validation and current software revisions for the installed control system on site.

10.  Manage capital projects related to instrumentation, controls and electrical.

11.  Supervise Instrumentation and Electrical contractors on site in all aspects of their work.

12.  Ensure that projects are installed and completed per design specifications, plant standards, and conform to regulatory requirements such as NFPA, NEC, etc.

13.  Working knowledge of 21CFR and cGMP regulations

 

14.  Procure equipment and services from outside vendors to meet site instrument, control and electrical requirements; prepare detailed specifications, obtain competitive quotations where applicable, and prepare purchase requisitions.

15.  Provide technical assistance and support to the production and maintenance departments as needed.

16.  Conceptualize, present and supervise the modernization of the electrical infrastructure of the site to optimize resource utilization and maximize reliability.

17.  Maximize production, quality, and repeatability through site automation network planning and implementation.

18.  Direct and supervise the activities of the Instrument and Controls Specialist, Electrical Engineer, and others as necessary to complete necessary work in ESD.

19.  Recommend and implement methods to increase the quality of products and/or services.

20.  Develops and implements process control improvements, including the selection/sizing of control valves, flow measurement devices, and field instrumentation.

21.  Monitor plant systems, analyze performance, and initiate action for optimization to achieve plant goals for safety, productivity, and cost effectiveness.

22.  Participate in self-development activities and training of others.

23.  Complete the Electrical/Instrumental Engineer Core Competency in the Learning Management System.

24.  Assist all departments in investigations of instrument related issues including completion of assigned deviations and CAPAs.

25.  Draft, review and approve Standard Operating Procedures.

26.  Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices.  Protect employees and visitors by maintaining a safe and clean working environment.

27.  Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business or as requested by supervisor or management.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

 

•       BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience

•       5-10 years of applicable industrial experience

•       Knowledge of electrical distribution, controls, advanced automated systems (i.e. Distributed Control Systems)

•       Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC)

•       Supervisory experience

•       Excellent oral and written communication skills

•       Capital project experience desirable

•       Experience with Foxboro DCS systems is a plus

Language/Communication Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Incumbent may be required to obtain/qualify for and maintain the clearance to wear a respirator at a “class B” level or above following OSHA mandated guidelines.
