Global Manager of Legal and Compliance Operations

This is an exempt level position.

Position Summary:

The Global Manager of Legal and Compliance Operations is a pivotal role to evolving towards a best-in-class legal operations function for AMRI’s Legal Department.  This role reports to the Senior Counsel, Drug Product and Legal Operations, and works closely with the Senior Vice President, General Counsel to execute the operational aspects of the Legal Department’s strategic and annual operating plans.  This role will be a change agent, leading Legal Department efforts to drive efficiency, innovate and improve internal client experiences.  In addition, this role includes the day-to-day management of the following activities as they relate to the Legal Department: finance, information technology, e-Discovery and records management, vendor management, client service and delivery, project management, and general administration.

Position Responsibilities:

•         Finance/Budget Management

o   Work with the General Counsel and the Department’s Finance business partners to prepare and monitor the Departmental budget

o   Support the Department in continuous evaluation and optimization of outside counsel and other legal vendor expenses

o   Ensure quality of the billing process, from invoice review to communications with accounts payable and external vendors

o   Develop and implement cost control initiatives

•         Information Technology

o   In collaboration with others, ensure Department is appropriately supported with technology to allow more efficient and effective execution of legal and compliance functions

§  Primary and initial areas of focus are: contract workflows and management, matter and internal review management, document management, patent and trademark management, financial management/e-billing, and business intelligence/“dashboard” metrics/reporting

o   Serve as Department liaison with Corporate IT on corporate-wide IT initiatives affecting the Department

o   Manage relations with technology vendors to update and maintain systems and tools

o   Provide technical assistance to Department personnel

•         E-Discovery

o   Prepare and implement e-discovery program in preparation for corporate growth and scale; including strategic planning, tools and systems, and records management

•         Outside Counsel and Legal Vendor Management

o   Develop, manage and maintain the Department’s outside counsel management and legal vendor management initiatives to accomplish the General Counsel’s operational objectives; working with attorneys and other stakeholders to design, implement and administer such initiatives

o   Initiatives include the development and maintenance of outside counsel and vendor billing and services guidelines; the administration of a standardized rate increase request process; the implementation of alternative fee arrangements, performance scorecards, annual outside counsel educational meetings, and outside counsel and vendor diversity initiatives 

•         Client Service and Delivery

o   Develop strong and effective working relationships with other departments to contribute to the ability of the Department members to be valued business partners

•         Project Management

o   Manage the on-time, on-budget delivery of the Department’s projects, which typically will focus on strategic initiatives, process/procedure enhancements, and integration of the legal operations of corporate acquisitions; and all of which likely will involve technology

•         General Administration

o   Manages the Department’s policy repository and revision schedule, and external memberships

o   Develops effective metrics/KPIs to measure and improve performance

o   Other areas, as directed

Job Requirements

Ideal Candidate will Possess:


•         A bachelor’s degree and 5 years of work experience in operations, including experience successfully working with a seasoned legal team in a law firm or corporate legal department

•         An excellent ability to: grasp legal and business issues quickly; balance risks; exercise sound judgment; and provide practical and constructive operational advice in a growing, dynamic, entrepreneurial and fast-paced business environment

•         Strong project management skills; interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills with internal and external interactions at all levels; excellent problem-solving experience; and the ability to motivate self, and influence and motivate others

•         A proven track record of making an impact, developing and executing on strategies, and delivering superior results in both the short and long term, all with sound ethical principles

•         Experience with law and compliance department technologies; including without limitation: matter management, e-billing, business intelligence/analytics, document management, discovery management and contract management

•         Ideally, has an in-depth understanding of law firm billing, pricing and compensation practices, including experience with alternative fee arrangements and cost modeling
