Automation Controls Engineer

 

Albany Molecular Research Inc. provides global contract research and manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. 

Summary:

The Automation Controls Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving, system/equipment performance using analytical methods and processes. Effectively and efficiently provides project management, technical knowledge and skills, and administrative skills. Provides technical review and counsel on a variety of technical issues.  Automation Controls Engineer may also be assigned responsibility for maintaining critical computerized systems to include: Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), and Human Machine Interface (HMI) devices for manufacturing or monitoring systems.

   Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Able to define, prioritize and achieve realistic, specific goals and objectives

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, various departments, and outside contractors

  • Schedule, manage and review the work of outside trade or technical firms as well as outside contractors for equipment, facilities, utilities and other work,

  • Prepare project budgets and ensure that activities stay within the budgetary guidelines established

  • Identify and initiate projects for electrical and control changes/improvements within the guidance established

  • Support all engineering documentation efforts including SOP’s, PM’s and technical documents

  • Produce drawings and project proposals for review with management

  • Provide specifications and cost estimates for major equipment acquisitions

  • Provide programming support of building monitoring systems including HMI displays

  • Assure that facility/system engineering drawings and associated documentation (including work orders and Change Controls) are effectively and compliantly updated and maintained,

  • Demonstrate strong project management skills to control multiple projects and tasks simultaneously

  • Identify areas of cost effectiveness with outside contractors

  • Demonstrate good decision- making and judgement capabilities, with excellent attention to detail and follow through

  • Identify areas for cost containment

  • Other duties as assigned


Supervisory Responsibilities:                                                  

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Job Requirements

Education and/or Experience:     

Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar engineering degree

Minimum, 5-7 years of industrial experience dealing with similar systems and managing projects similar in scope and size

 

Language Skills:  


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write clearly and speak effectively.           

Mathematical Skills:        

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.                             

Computer Skills:                                             

 Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Access

Other Skills and Abilities:                                           

  • Excellent Communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to organize time in order to successfully manage multiple projects and priorities.

  • Ability to read, understand, interpret and implement technical writing and instructions.

  • Effective inter-personal relation skills, while maintaining the adaptability to achieve company goals.

  • Verbally expresses ideas and facts in a clear, logical, concise and in accepted grammatical style.

  • Prefer knowledge in design of building management systems and cleanroom aseptic facilities. 

  • Knowledgeable with regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, FDA, JP, EU, etc.).

Must pass background check

Must pass drug screen                                                  

 

Physical Demands:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

 

Work Environment:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
